Watercolors practicing light, shadows etc.

 

This is nothing special, more like a beginning painter might do, but its purpose was to practice using watercolor for shadows, light and dark, etc. Might be something to use in a children’s book. Just practice but fun to do. A question my teacher might ask is “From where is the light coming?” One thing about it is it is a bit colorful. 

Baker’s Garage & Sohio Gas Station in Lower Salem OH, Washington County

 According to Glen Baker, owner of this garage, at one time there was a restaurant on one side and a house on the other side of this building. Lower Salem, like so many small Ohio towns, was once booming with businesses.  Glen’s father owned this one. Glen also had nice looking cars around the place there in Lower Salem. This is my attempt in watercolor of recreating that place. I’m sure there were things I missed but without any reference photo of them, it’s hard to imagine. I hope there is some semblance of the old place. Lower Salem has suffered many floods in recent years but this building is still standing, minus the gas pumps and signs.

Garden Vegetables - Watercolor

 

Not only did our neighbor, Lisa, bring a bouquet of flowers the other day, she also brought these vegetables from her garden. I didn’t reposition them but painted them just as they lay on the kitchen counter. By the way, the vegetables were quite delicious!! We ended up with cucumber, onion and tomato salad one night and stuffed peppers another, not to mention the green onions soaked in salt water. 

Flowers in Gouache

 

This painting is done in gouache. Gouache is similar to watercolor but is more opaque. I decided to give it a try on this one. This is 11 x 14 matted and ready to frame. The actual flowers were brought to me by my neighbor from her beautiful flower garden.

A well preserved old school in Marr, OH. This is Bethel School, now used as a community center. This is my attempt at a watercolor painting. 

Watercolor Play

 The best way to learn a medium is to read all you can about it and practice. (Or ask Judy, my friend and former teacher)This is one in that category using watercolor. I didn’t ask Judy about it but she’ll likely see it and comment. Anyway, it was fun to draw and relaxing to paint. It’s just like playing a new piece on the piano. The more you practice the better chance for success. The piano and painting keep me busy…and sometimes, out of trouble! (No time for boredom!)

It’s Not Christmas

 

Since it is raining every day, it might as well snow! We are ready for some nice summer weather!

Plein Air - From the porch

 Today I sat on the porch while the yard work was getting done and painted what I saw in the yard. The sun was hot and paint dried quickly. Without the sunshine on it inside, the painting looked darker. My painter friend, Judy, and I used to paint outside often. I miss that. Here’s my creation.
