About Me

One day while walking in our yard the neighbor across the road was outside also. So, as was our habit, we began talking. During the conversation, Judy (McKee), my then neighbor, asked me if I had ever thought of painting. My reaction was nothing but a laugh saying, “Judy, I can’t even draw a nice circle.” Her reply was, “You could learn.”

My thought was, me, learn to paint??? She must be kidding. Upon telling my husband about this it seemed that he laughed, too.

This encounter was sometime in the fall of that year for the first of January I said to Don, my husband, “I think I will take her up on this offer or at least see how it goes.”

My painting classes started in 2015. Once per week Judy’s studio was open for my classes. We would spend an hour or more on the lesson that she chose.
This was my first experience with painting. Watercolor was my first choice as the medium because it sounded like water would be easy to clean up after my messes!

My lessons continued for a year or so.  Pictures have always been taken of all of my paintings so you will see the good, bad or whatever posted here. Judy has always said, “Keep painting” and her instructions have been followed.

Below you can see some of our outings. Nice days were perfect for painting outside and sometimes have friends join in.

I am forever grateful to Judy for introducing me to now what has become a big part of “my world.” Never give up. If you have the will, there is a way!

Enjoy your visit to Deloris Ullmann Art.

At a Loss
The first day of instruction I went to her studio
What a collection of things I did see!
There were skillful creations and brief illustrations
Of various objects that seemed far beyond me.

We sat at the table with paper in hand
We explored colors, mixes and blends.
It felt so awkward to pickup the brush
Dip it in water to paint and such.

Applied to the paper, it looked like a smear
She said, “That’s o.k., there’s lots to learn here.”
“Do you think I can do it?”I asked wearily.
“Of course you can, just wait and see.”

A New World
The art teacher asked, “Did you ever consider painting?”
My reply, “I don’t think I can even draw a good circle.”
“You know it’s possible to learn to do such
Just take my instruction and practice much.
I’ll show you the way…
It’ll make your day.”

The teacher was right, she gave me insight
To a world I’d never known.
Now I owe her a lot for she taught me enough
To see beauty in more things around.

On days when inspiration comes more easily
That’s where you’ll find me
Following her motto
“Keep Painting.”

The Challenge of the Tree
Trees are wondrous creations
Consider this…have you ever seen any two trees that are exactly alike?
How could there be so many ways for leaves to turn?
Or ways for branches to grow?
Or colors to emulate?

The art of painting opens the eyes of the artist to many contrasts, colors and shapes of trees and things
And challenges one to attempt to capture them on paper.
Accomplished artists may come close
Yet the task remains one that they
Can never perfectly accomplish.

“A Treasure”
So many tubes in various colors
Waiting indefinitely for me to decide
Which one to use to make the right green
Cobalt and yellow or ultramarine?

This box of colors is really a treasure
So many options and things there to do.
Who would have known that so much pleasure
Could come from watercolor and all of its hues?

“Getting Started”
“What do I need to accomplish this deed?”
“Not very much, “ she declared.
“Just some art paper some paint and some brushes
And maybe a pencil to spare
You’ll start an adventure with no clear destination
Just know you’ll never get there.”
Art has no ending, only a beginning
To a world that awaits out there.
